Compare changes using the starting value

Distinguish absolute change from percentage change.

Understand the idea

Percentage change uses the starting value as the denominator. The same absolute increase can have different percentage meanings.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A fictional count rises from 40 to 50. The increase is 10; percentage increase = 10 / 40 × 100 = 25%.

MAKE SOMETHING YOU CAN EXPLAIN

Your practical challenge

Show absolute and percentage change for 40 to 50 and for 80 to 90. Explain the difference.

Review your evidence

These ticks are your self-review. They do not automatically assess project quality. Ask an adult or partner to review what you can show.

Use the skill in a new situation

Describe why a percentage increase from a zero starting value is undefined with this formula.
