GRADE 7 · DATA AND DECISIONS · ABOUT 45 MINUTES

Use the median thoughtfully

Find the middle value after sorting the data.

Understand the idea

For an odd number of observations, the median is the middle sorted value. A large outlier can affect the mean more than the median.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Sorted times 3, 4, 5, 6, 22 have median 5. Their mean is 8. The large value matters when describing the typical session.

MAKE SOMETHING YOU CAN EXPLAIN

Your practical challenge

Calculate mean and median, then explain which you would report for a stated purpose. Keep the outlier visible.

Review your evidence

These ticks are your self-review. They do not automatically assess project quality. Ask an adult or partner to review what you can show.

Use the skill in a new situation

Explain why deleting an unusual result needs evidence, not convenience.
