Understand the idea
The arithmetic mean balances a set of numbers. Use the same unit for every value. A mean need not equal an observed value.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Read or choose any step
- Read
Read the labels and values: A: 10, B: 20, C: 15, D: 15.
- Represent
Compare the bars on a scale that starts at zero.
- Calculate
Work through the calculation in the example; result: 15.
- Interpret
Explain what the result means and what it does not establish.

MAKE SOMETHING YOU CAN EXPLAIN
Your practical challenge
Show the total and mean, with units. Explain why the mean does not say that every session lasted the same time.
These ticks are your self-review. They do not automatically assess project quality. Ask an adult or partner to review what you can show.
Use the skill in a new situation
Create a different four-value set with mean 15.
