Interpret a comparison without claiming causation

Describe an observed difference and possible confounding factors.

Understand the idea

A difference between groups does not by itself prove a cause. Other conditions may differ.

WORKED EXAMPLE

In a fictional study, a group with reminders completes 18 of 20 tasks, while another completes 14 of 20. The difference is 20 percentage points; the groups may differ in other ways.

MAKE SOMETHING YOU CAN EXPLAIN

Your practical challenge

Report both completion rates and two alternative explanations. Propose a fairer comparison.

Review your evidence

These ticks are your self-review. They do not automatically assess project quality. Ask an adult or partner to review what you can show.

Use the skill in a new situation

Distinguish a 20 percentage-point difference from a relative percentage increase.
