Lesson 1 · Fill a ten-frame
Find how many more counters make ten.
You have 8 counters. How many more make 10?
Answer: 2. 8 + 2 = 10. Two places are empty.
Which pair makes 10?
Answer: 5 and 5. Five in each row makes 10 altogether.
There are 10 counters. You remove 3. How many are left?
Answer: 7. Start with ten and take away three: 10 - 3 = 7.
Discuss: Draw a ten-frame. Ask a partner to put in 8 dots, then find how many dots are missing.
Teaching note: The spaces are places for counters. Count the filled places, not every box, when finding how many counters you have. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Lesson 2 · Build ten and some more
Show numbers from 11 to 19 as ten and extra ones.
One ten and 3 ones make…
Answer: 13. 10 + 3 = 13.
Which shows 18?
Answer: 1 ten and 8 ones. Eighteen is 10 + 8.
How many extra ones go beside a full ten-frame to make 15?
Answer: 5. Ten is already in the frame. Five more make fifteen.
Discuss: Use drawings to show 12 and 16. Circle the group of ten in each drawing.
Teaching note: The 1 in 14 means ten, not one loose counter. Fourteen is 10 + 4, not 1 + 4. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Lesson 3 · Compare two teen numbers
Use extra ones to compare numbers from 11 to 19.
Which is greater?
Answer: 16. Both have one ten; six ones are more than two.
Which is less than 15?
Answer: 13. Thirteen comes before fifteen and has fewer extra ones.
Arrange from least to greatest.
Answer: 11, 14, 18. All have one ten. Compare 1, 4 and 8 extra ones.
Discuss: Make 11 and 19 using drawings. Point to the same ten in both, then explain which has more.
Teaching note: A teen number with a longer spoken name is not always greater. Use the counters or number order. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
