Lesson 1 · Listen and respond to an action
Follow a short spoken action instruction in an accessible way.
In “point, then wave”, what comes first?
Answer: point. The action before then comes first.
Which word is an action?
Answer: tap. Tap tells what to do.
Which is a gentle tap?
Answer: a light brief touch. Tap describes a light touch.
Discuss: Give a partner or puppet two gentle instructions. Ask which action came first.
Teaching note: Following an instruction means noticing its action and order, not copying every possible movement. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Adult observation
Ask the learner to explain and show the goal using a fresh example.
- Uses the target word appropriately
- Explains or demonstrates with support as needed
Adult observation; multiple-choice scores alone do not establish speaking or writing mastery
Lesson 2 · Make and describe an outline
Follow drawing instructions and compare two outlines respectfully.
What does an outline show?
Answer: the outside edge. An outline follows an outside edge.
Two drawings use red. What is the same?
Answer: colour. The information tells us only that the colour matches.
One outline has dots; one has stripes. What differs?
Answer: pattern. Dots and stripes are different patterns.
Discuss: Make two simple outlines and finish “These are the same in ___ and different in ___.” An adult may write your spoken words.
Teaching note: Different does not mean worse. Compare one visible feature without judging a person’s body. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Adult observation
Ask the learner to explain and show the goal using a fresh example.

- Explains or demonstrates with support as needed
Adult observation; multiple-choice scores alone do not establish speaking or writing mastery
Lesson 3 · Read a familiar routine in order
Use first, next, then and last to order a routine.
In our displayed routine, which step comes last?
Answer: dry. Dry is the final card in this routine.
Which word tells the beginning?
Answer: first. First names the beginning of the sequence.
What follows rub in our four-card sequence?
Answer: rinse. Rinse is the third card, after rub.
Discuss: Tell an adult the order for packing a pencil case. Use first and last, then try the routine.
Teaching note: A list of action words is easier to follow when the order is clear. Last does not mean first. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.

Final check · Set 1
Try one set after the lessons. Use the other set after reviewing any errors.
For “wave, then sit”, which comes last?
sit. Sit follows then, so it comes last.
A child cannot comfortably do a movement. How can the language task still work?
Point to the matching picture.. Pointing can show that the instruction was understood.
Which is a respectful comparison?
The colours are different.. The sentence describes a visible feature without judging a person.
What should tracing follow?
the model’s outside edge. An outline follows the edge.
Which order matches our cards?
wet and soap, rub, rinse, dry. The order follows the four displayed stages.
What does rinse mean in this routine?
wash soap away with water. Rinsing removes soap using water.
Final check · Set 2
Try one set after the lessons. Use the other set after reviewing any errors.
Which instruction includes a body word?
Raise a hand.. Hand is a body word.
One person gives the instruction; the other responds. What helps both practise?
Swap roles.. Swapping gives each learner a speaking and listening turn.
Can a paper shape be used instead of your hand?
Yes. The learning goal is following and describing an outline.
Both outlines have dots. Which statement is supported?
They share a dot pattern.. The given matching feature is the dot pattern.
After the water is no longer needed, what action saves it?
Turn it off.. Turning it off avoids unnecessary running water.
Which sentence names an ending?
Last, dry your hands.. Last marks the final step.
