Lesson 1 · Describe a picture with evidence
Describe who and what a picture shows without turning guesses into facts.
Our original scene labels Mira and Ayan as children. How many children are labelled?
Answer: two. Mira and Ayan are two children; the third person is labelled adult.
Which statement is supported by our scene?
Answer: The adult holds an open book.. The book is visible; preferences and future events are not.
Which sentence is a guess about the future?
Answer: Ayan will travel tomorrow.. Tomorrow’s travel is not shown.
Discuss: Use the official pp8–9 picture. Say three supported observations and ask one question that the picture cannot answer.
Teaching note: A picture can support some details but cannot reveal every person’s thoughts or future plans. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Adult observation
Discuss the official spread pp8–9. Help the learner scan the entire spread, describe games and people, and share a game they know. Accept home-language names and build an English sentence together.
- Counts using the whole spread
- Gives three supported observations
- Labels one uncertain idea as a question
Adult observation: independent / supported / revisit; record a spoken, signed, written or other accessible response.
Lesson 2 · Hear short e in everyday words
Compare short a and short e words and practise a/an phrases.
Which word shares the middle vowel of pen?
Answer: hen. Pen and hen share the target short e sound.
What changes when pan becomes pen?
Answer: the middle vowel sound. The /p/ and /n/ stay; the middle vowel changes.
Choose the phrase.
Answer: an egg. Egg begins with a vowel sound.
Discuss: Sort pan, pen, bag and bed by their middle vowel sound with adult support. Write one sentence using a pen.
Teaching note: The letter name E is not the short e vowel in pen. A word can contain e and still begin with a consonant sound. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Adult observation
Read source p14 together, matching the word to each picture. Model short e, contrast pan/pen and check four handwritten words separately.
- Hears the modelled short e sound
- Uses a/an phrases appropriately
- Writes distinguishable letters
Adult observation: independent / supported / revisit; record a spoken, signed, written or other accessible response.
Lesson 3 · Use opposite words carefully
Choose an opposite that matches the feature being described.
What is the opposite of up for direction?
Answer: down. Up and down contrast direction.
A token is in the box. Which word contrasts its position?
Answer: out. In and out contrast position relative to the box.
What contrasts with an open door?
Answer: a closed door. Closed reverses the opening state.
Discuss: Draw four paired objects showing opposites. Label the feature in each pair and say a sentence.
Teaching note: Any different word is not automatically an opposite. Small and red describe different features, so they are not opposites. Open responses need discussion; they are not automatically marked.
Adult observation
Use source p15 opposites as language practice. Ask for an original sentence for each pair, using objects for size words and supplied pictures for temperature.
- Pairs words within the same feature
- Uses opposite words in meaningful sentences
- Avoids judging people by size
Adult observation: independent / supported / revisit; record a spoken, signed, written or other accessible response.
Final check · Set 1
Try one set after the lessons. Use the other set after reviewing any errors.
Which question cannot be answered from our scene alone?
What is Mira’s favourite food?. A favourite food is not pictured or stated.
Choose a complete sentence.
The adult holds a book.. The sentence names who and what the person does.
Which pair has the same middle vowel in this model?
bed and net. Bed and net have short e.
Does an go before pen just because pen contains e?
No; pen begins with a consonant sound.. The beginning of the next spoken word decides a/an.
What contrasts with hot in a temperature description?
cold. Hot and cold concern temperature.
Why are red and small not opposites?
They describe different features.. Red is colour; small is size.
Final check · Set 2
Try one set after the lessons. Use the other set after reviewing any errors.
Two learners notice different true details. What can help?
Each points to evidence in the picture.. Different observations can both be supported.
What should change if a sentence says four children but only two are shown?
Revise the count to match the picture.. The description should match evidence.
Which pair contrasts short a and short e?
bag and beg. Bag and beg differ in the middle vowel.
What evidence shows letter formation, beyond choosing a sound?
Writing the letters for an adult to inspect. Written work allows checking formation.
Which is a respectful use of a size contrast?
Compare thick and thin lines in a drawing.. Object descriptions allow learning without judging people.
A narrow ribbon is compared with a wide ribbon. What feature changes?
width. Narrow and wide describe width.
