Evaporation happens at the surface
Water particles gain energy from their surroundings. Some surface particles move fast enough to escape into the air as invisible water vapour.
- It can happen below boiling point.
- Warmth, moving air, and a larger exposed surface make it faster.
- This is why wet washing dries on a warm, breezy day.
Look closely: water vapour is invisible. The white mist near a kettle is made of tiny liquid droplets after vapour cools.
